Glossary

  • Basket - While browsing the LSM catalogue, customers can choose to add items that they wish to buy to the "Basket". This works in a similar way to many other e-commerce websites. Items in the basket can be purchased by choosing "check out". Please note, your basket will be locked for other users for that account by default to prevent other users adding items to the basket whilst an existing order is being processed
  • Chest - Chest is a Jisc service that delivers licences for software and online resources. For more information, visit the Chest website
  • Institutional account - In the "My Account" view, you can choose link your login details for Licence subscriptions manager to your own institution's login. Click "My account is linked with Institutional login" while logging in to Licence subscriptions manager, enter your institution's name or choose from a list, and you will be directed to your own institution's login page
  • Jisc Banding - Your Jisc Band is used to determine your subscription fees for some of our resources. Bands are allocated to every organisation that uses our negotiation and licensing service.   • Jisc Collections - Jisc Collections is the negotiation and licensing service that supports the procurement of digital content for higher and further education and research institutions in the UK. For more information, visit the 'About Jisc Collections' page
  • Jisc Model Licence - The Model License is the foundation for all of Jisc's agreements. It includes all the terms and conditions that your institution and your users need to ensure that you get the most out of the online resources you subscribe to.   • Journal Usage Statistics Portal (JUSP) - JUSP is a shared portal that enables efficient access to e-resource usage statistics. JUSP is provided free of charge to Jisc members as part of their subscription. However, members will need to sign up to JUSP by accepting the agreement through Licence subscriptions manager.   • Knowledge Base+ (KB+) - KB+ is a shared community service that helps UK academic libraries manage their electronic resources more efficiently. For more information, visit the KB+ website
  • Licence document - The document that contains the terms and conditions. This is visible on the LSM product page
  • Licence subscriptions manager (LSM) - Licence subscriptions manager is Jisc's online ordering service for digital content agreements. Users can browse products and services, then manage those subscriptions in one central place
  • Mixed rate VAT - Certain products are marked as Mixed rate VAT. This means that some sets of content (Product Content Options) that are available through this product are charged at the UK standard VAT rate of 20% whereas others are charged at the zero rate of VAT, which applies for certain electronic publications (see guidance on gov.uk)
  • Negotiation document - The document that contains the monthly negotiation reports, which appears to customers in the Negotiation reports tab in the My Account area
  • Negotiation reports - Monthly negotiation reports are available via the My Account page in Licence subscriptions manager. This report provides updates on the negotiation activity undertaken by Jisc Collections. It provides details of forthcoming renewals and other associated news of note. Our summary report provides an overview of progress on the major journal negotiations. The content of these reports are confidential and should not be shared outside of your institution and particularly not with publishers or agents. We will add reports monthly and retain them here for three months
  • Offer document - The document that contains the offer details. This is visible on the LSM product page
  • Product Content Options (PCOs) - Some agreements allow customers to select different sets of content. Product Content Option defines these groups. These are displayed at the bottom of each product page, visible in groups. The publisher may specify whether these options are exclusive (i.e. the customer must select just one) or inclusive (i.e. the customer must select many)
  • Quotations - Certain products use a quotation pricing model where the relevant publisher confirms the quotation details including the pricing, the sets of content that are part of the quote and the dates to which the quote pricing applies to. If we have already received the quotation details from the publisher, the base prices (excluding VAT) will be listed on that product's catalogue page. If we do not have this data, you can use the "Request a Quote" button which automatically requests the quote from the publisher. Your fees will be loaded to LSM for you to purchase once the Publisher has confirmed your fee to Jisc
  • Standard rate VAT - Certain products are marked as Standard rate VAT. This means that all individual product content options within this product are charged with the standard UK VAT rate of 20%
  • Transaction management charges (TMCs) - TMCs are charges applied to Jisc Collections licence agreements to cover the costs associated with providing an administration service to pay content owners/vendors on behalf of a Jisc member or customer. They are set as fixed amounts, determined by multiple factors. For more information, see the TMCs guide
  • Transitional Agreement - A transitional agreement is an open access publishing agreement that meets the sector's requirements for Transitional Agreements and is then registered in the ESAC transformative agreements registry. For more information, visit the ESAC website
  • Voluntary Ex Ante Transparency Notices (VEATs) - Jisc uses a VEAT notice to announce over threshold requirements (above £213,477 including VAT from 1 January 2022), which are not going out to competitive tender. In other words, VEATS are used when a contract is intended to be awarded to a single supplier that is deemed uniquely suitable. For more information, visit our VEATS page
  • Wishlist - A collection of Wishlist Items that the user intends to retain as a list, to ease rediscovery later. There is no obligation to place an order on these items. Instead, the Basket is used to create a list of items that you intend to purchase
  • Zero rate VAT - Certain products are marked as Zero rate VAT. All individual sets of content (Product Content Options) that are available through this product are charged at the zero rate of VAT, which applies for certain electronic publications (see guidance on gov.uk)
