    The product options within the Britannica for FE Agreement include: Britannica Academic, Britannica ImageQuest, and Original Sources. Britannica Academic is an easy-to-navigate platform hosting over 100,000 articles along with full-text journal articles, primary sources and e-books and over 52,000 images, videos and other multimedia. Britannica ImageQuest is an online library of over three million rights-cleared images from more than 60 of the world's image libraries. Collections include National Geographic, Newscom, National History Museum, Getty Images and other leading names. Content is suitable for GSCE, AS/A Level/Scottish Higher National, undergraduate, postgraduate and vocational studies. Britannica Original Sources is a database of over 420,000 historical documents from across a wide variety of topics and time periods.

Britannica's content is selected by a dedicated editorial team of over 100 people, whose work is supplemented by content written by Nobel laureates, historians, curators and professors. It serves as a current and comprehensive resource for college-level learners, researchers, and faculty.

Key features

  • Merriam-Webster's Collegiate® is a built-in dictionary and thesaurus that allows users to click on any word to see its definition and a full list of synonyms. An audio pronunciation feature is also enabled which can provide support to ESL students
  • "My Research" allows faculty and students to manage all of their research content in one place. With this feature, articles can be organised into packs and saved to a personal account at any time while logged into the site
  • The interactive World Atlas provides access to detailed maps and country data simultaneously
  • Citations are included at the end of each article make easy referencing a key benefit of using Britannica Academic at Further and Higher education level

Yes, all articles contain hyperlinks to relevant articles. Longer articles have a contents page at the top, which links to relevant chapters further down in the article.

Metadata standards

Content held within ImageQuest is tagged using the Information Management and Retrieval System (IMARS). IMARS is custom built by Britannica to provide reliable and consistent taxonomic metadata for the large, varied and continually expanding content collections.

Currently the metadata contained within the Britannica educational databases can be accessed in a user-centric way.

Post search options

Following a search query, users are presented with a variety of options to filter their Images, including by size, orientation and collection house.

Search options

Britannica provides an Amazon 9 OpenSearch API protocol to enhance third party federated searching. This "Open Search" allows for direct querying of Britannica content through tools including EBSCO discovery.

Usage statistics

Usage statistics are offered in a COUNTER compliant format. They are available via username and password, or on request.
