Cairn Collections 2020-2022

    Cairn.info offers an extensive collection of publications in the French language in the areas of humanities and social sciences with access to over 500 journals and more than 8,500 e-books from major French, Belgian and Swiss publishers on one platform.

Product overview

Along with journals, Cairn.info offers collections of e-books and reference collections such as "Que sais-je?", a Pocket Encyclopedias collection from the French Publisher PUF. The project is supported by the Bibliothèque Nationale de France (French National Library) and the Centre National Du Livre (National Book Centre).

Subscription Options

Journals 

Institutions can subscribe to the Bouquet Général (the complete collection) or to any of the following sub-collections:

  • Humanities and Social Science Collection, 385 journals in 2019
  • Economics, Social and Political Sciences Collection, 284 journals in 2019
  • French Studies Collection, 150 journals in 2019 in the areas of History, French Literature and Philosophy

A subscription to one of the collections includes access to the English version of the journals that are part of the "bouquet" on Cairn International Edition, provided the English version exists.

E-books & Pocket Encyclopedias

A wide variety of e-books and pocket encyclopedias are also available on a subscription basis.

  1. E-books: over 8,500 research e-books make up the collection on Cairn.info. Subscribing institutions can access every title without any limit on the number of concurrent users. The number of e-books available in this collection has grown by at least 25% annually over the last three years and will continue to grow by at least 10% annually.
  2. Pocket encyclopedias: (1,510 titles): this is a popular format of e-book in the French speaking world. Titles are generally between 80 and 150 pages long and provide an in-depth introduction to a broad range of topics. Authors are usually experts in their fields. This collection is made up of two collections, Que sais-je? and Repères.
    • Que sais-je? (880 titles): this is a collection of pocket encyclopedias published since 1941 by the Presses Universitaires de France (PUF), which has sold worldwide more than 160 million copies translated into 43 languages.
    • Repères (460 titles): a collection of pocket encyclopedias published by La Découverte, dedicated in particular to social and economic issues.

Coming soon in 2020 is the option to pick and choose certain titles with incremental discounts applied depending on the number of titles taken.

Backfiles or archives included

For each title, the service generally offers all issues published from 2001 to the present without any embargo period.

Authentication

Authentication is via IP address range, reverse proxy server and the Central Authentication Service (CAS) Single Signature Online protocol. Cairn is now also UKAMF-compliant (Shibboleth access).

Federated searching

Cairn supports XML Gateway or HTTP connections, and has led developments at this level with companies providing meta search engines such as Ex Libris, Ebsco, Serial Solutions etc.

This resource is compliant with the OpenURL standard.

Marc records

MARC records for Cairn's eBooks can be obtained directly through a specifically designed tool or though WorldCat.

Metadata standards

All metadata is open access and is based on Dublin Core metadata standards, through the OAI PMH compliant platform http://oai.cairn.info.

KBART format for all journals offered by Cairn.

Personalisation

Institutions can use the administration platform to administer contents and disciplines available for their users. Users can sign up for email alerts telling them about new articles by a particular author, or about the publication of the latest volume of any journal held by Cairn.

Post search options

Users can order results by relevance, or chronologically. Articles can be downloaded in pdf and html format.

Search options

Searching supports patterns and adjacency, as well as boolean operators. Searches can be limited by title, author, keywords, year of publication and subject.

Usage statistics

COUNTER compliant statistics are available online. Excel reports show the number of articles consulted in html and in pdf formats for each journal.
