    The Gibson Index is an online database of UK-based small technology businesses. It contains profiles of over 70,000 early stage start-ups, University spinouts, SME veterans, technology-led consultancies and business partnerships.

Product overview

The Gibson Index has catalogued and profiled more than 70,000 UK-based technology companies across over 50 trade and tech sectors and is the largest dedicated database of SMEs in the world.

For university and FE staff, students, and researchers The Gibson Index provides a directory-catalogue of some of the UK's most significant SMEs. All profiles have a named contact, phone and email address listed.

The Gibson Index currently includes:

  • Profiles from the largest sectors - Aero, Auto, Food & Drink, Pharma, Engineering, IT-Digital and Construction
  • Nearly all of the UK's firms in niche tech areas - AI, Nanotech, Sensors, Radio, Instrumentation, Magnetics and Photonics
  • A listing of over 2,800 UK university spinouts
  • Profiles of the most significant SMEs since the early 1980s for use by archivists, historians, and business, corporate and economics researchers (e.g. Technophone Ltd, which launched the world's first handheld mobile phone)
  • A full listing of companies that have won a UK Government grant: the DTI Smart Award, Regional Development Grant, and EU Horizon 2020 grant, as well as every Queen's Award for Enterprise winner
  • The names of more than 90,000 prominent entrepreneurs, executives, financiers, engineers and scientists
  • 5,500 large and medium-sized firms listed in the database

Current customers include the Royal Academy of Engineering, the Institute of Physics, QinetiQ plc, BP Technology Centre, and UKTI/BEIS.

Publisher selection policy

The Gibson Index is compiled and maintained by a team of researchers, backed up by specialist technologists, experts, academics, sector experts, and the managers of 1,000+ business centres UK-wide, who keep the Index posted about new arrivals.

Backfiles or archives separate

Backfile content for most titles from Vol 1 to December 1998 is available for purchase or by way of a lease arrangement (on a title by title basis, or as a package) direct from SAGE. Please contact James Pawley james.pawley@sagepub.co.uk for details or prices.

Additional discounts off the price of the leased Backfile is available to NESLi2 institutions (see table below). The list price for the complete Backfile is calculated annually as 10% of the purchase price. In 2008 this is £8,300 plus VAT.

Individual titles leased as part of the package for 12 years would be considered "owned" and no further lease fee would be charged. A hosting fee of £15 per title to a maximum of £450 per year would be payable for owned titles.
